Half Moon Battery is included with all Edinburgh Castle tickets. No separate ticket is needed. You’ll usually reach it in the upper part of the castle route after the initial climb through the fortress, and you can pause here before continuing to Crown Square and nearby highlights. Book a guided tour or an early timed entry if you want the military story explained clearly without fighting midday bottlenecks.

Best tickets to experience Half Moon Battery

Most visitors don’t realize the Half Moon Battery exists because David’s Tower failed. After English artillery shattered the tower during the 1573 Lang Siege, the castle rebuilt this side as a broad curved battery better suited to gun warfare. Today it still carries a ceremonial military role through the One O’Clock Gun, linking a 16th-century defensive repair to one of Edinburgh’s best-known daily traditions.
