I had visited before but it was my daughter's first visit and she was picked as Sweaty Betty - she thoroughly enjoyed this and the Judge was particularly excellent in her role. We had a really enjoyable visit, with staff engagement making us laugh and scream in equal measure. I would certainly return to the Edinburgh Dungeons.

Arrival on the Royal Mile

Your visit begins on the cobbled stretch of the Royal Mile, just moments from Edinburgh Castle. Inside the tall, historic tower building, you check in at reception and step into a narrow stairwell that immediately signals this won’t be a flat, open gallery. The experience unfolds vertically, one level at a time.

Head straight to the rooftop

Most visitors climb directly to the top floor first. A door opens onto the rooftop terrace, and suddenly the city spreads out in every direction. Chimneys cluster below, castle walls dominate the skyline, and distant hills frame the horizon. Telescopes and binoculars let you zoom into street scenes happening far beneath you.

The Victorian Camera Obscura show

Just inside the rooftop chamber, lights dim and attention shifts to a large white viewing table. Through a system of mirrors, lenses, and a giant periscope, a live image of Edinburgh appears in motion. As a guide narrates, pedestrians drift across the projection and traffic glides silently through the streets in real time.

Descending into the illusion floors

After the show, you begin working your way down through five floors of interactive exhibits. Lighting shifts, colours intensify, and sounds of laughter echo between rooms. Each level focuses on bending perception through reflection, shadow, scale, and movement.

Testing balance and perspective

You step into the Vortex Tunnel and attempt to walk in a straight line while the rotating cylinder around you insists the floor is tilting. In the Ames Room, one person appears to grow taller while another shrinks dramatically, even though both stand on the same surface.

Wrapping up at your own pace

There is no fixed route or strict time limit once inside. You can revisit favourite illusions, take rooftop photos again, or linger in puzzle areas before heading back down to the Royal Mile — now seeing the real world just a little differently than when you entered.

  • Ride before walking: If using the hop on hop off bus, consider doing a full loop first to orient yourself before exploring the Royal Mile on foot.
  • Allow proper time: Set aside at least two hours for Camera Obscura alone so you can revisit favourite illusions without feeling rushed.
  • Travel light: Staircases connect all six floors, so carrying minimal bags makes moving between exhibits far more comfortable and enjoyable.
  • Mind the stairs: There are just under 100 steps to the rooftop, so pace yourself and use the seating available on each floor.
  • Check the weather: Clear days enhance rooftop views dramatically, so if your schedule allows, plan your visit when visibility across Edinburgh is strongest.
