Well worth a visit to Holyroodhouse Palace. A seamless entry with a small group tour led by knowledgeable guides makes for an enjoyable, relaxing tour of this historical site. Personal favorites of the interior was the drawing room and the bed chamber of Mary Queen of Scots.

Although it was a bit blustery, we enjoyed our first visit to Holyrood Palace and Abbey. The audio tour guide was easy to use and quite informative. One of the indoor highlights of the tour was the room with the purported blood stain marking Rizzio's place of death near Mary Queen of Scots bedchamber. Ah, intrigue! The grounds next the Palace and the Abbey ruins were a delight to walk through with the presence of early spring flowers. Overall, the Holyrood Palace self-guided tour was an informative and pleasing way to spend part of our day visiting Edinburgh.

Signing up was quick and easy, and the prices were reasonable; the zoo map was also easy to use in the app. The dinosaurs were an unexpected highlight for the little ones, too.

The welcome on the bus was great. The seating arrangement was also great, since we could change seats whenever we wanted—especially to avoid the rain, since there weren’t many passengers! The audio guide was easy to understand and translated into French! We learned so much about Edinburgh!

We arrived early in the morning, around 10 a.m. Since there was no specific time listed on the ticket, you can go whenever you like. At the entrance, they helped us exchange our tickets for the reservation we’d made, and the whole process was very easy. The staff is friendly and helpful. They give you a free audio guide so you can listen to the castle’s history. You can complete the tour in an hour and a half to two hours. It’s a beautiful place steeped in history.

Things to know before booking your Royal Yacht Britannia tickets

  • Booking window: Tickets are timed and can sell out on weekends and in summer. Book at least a few days in advance to secure your preferred entry slot.

  • Lift access onboard: A central lift connects all five decks, allowing easy movement between levels without using stairs, though some sections may still involve slight level changes.
  • Narrow corridors note: Some internal corridors and doorways are narrow due to the ship’s original design, so movement may feel tighter in certain areas, especially during busier visiting hours.
  • Guide dogs allowed: Registered guide dogs are welcome onboard, ensuring visitors with visual impairments can comfortably navigate the yacht with appropriate assistance throughout their visit.
  • Stroller friendly access: Prams and strollers are allowed across most areas, with lifts and ramps making it easier to move between decks without needing to fold or carry them.
Security personnel using metal detector on male passenger at airport.
  • No pets allowed: Pets are not permitted onboard the yacht. Only registered guide dogs are allowed, so plan accordingly if travelling with animals during your visit.
  • Follow one-way route: The visit follows a clearly marked one-way route through the yacht, helping manage visitor flow and ensuring you see all areas in the intended sequence.
  • Timed entry slots: Entry is based on your selected time slot. Arrive early, as late arrivals may not be accommodated during busy periods with limited capacity.
  • Security checks required: All visitors must pass through security checks before boarding. Expect bag inspections, and avoid carrying restricted or bulky items to speed up entry.
  • Respect onboard spaces: Do not touch restricted areas or displays. Interiors are preserved as originally used, so maintaining distance helps protect furnishings and historic details.

Visitor tips

  • Let the first deck set your pace: The opening sections establish the route and tone. If you rush here, you’ll likely feel out of sync for the rest of the visit.
  • Use the audio selectively: Not every room needs full playback. Skipping shorter segments in tighter spaces helps you avoid bottlenecks and keeps the visit flowing naturally.
  • Pause where spaces open up: The decks and larger rooms are better for lingering. Save your slower moments for these areas instead of holding up narrower interior sections.
  • Time the tearoom strategically: Mid-visit tends to be busiest. Either stop early before the rush or wait until the final stretch for a quieter, more relaxed break.
  • Notice transitions between decks: The shift from royal spaces to working areas is subtle but intentional. Paying attention to these changes adds more context than the rooms alone.
  • Pick your moment for photos: The best shots aren’t inside tight corridors but on the open decks or in wider rooms where you can step aside without interrupting the flow.
  • Don’t rush the Engine Room: It’s easy to walk through quickly, but this space rewards a slower look, especially if you’re interested in how the yacht actually operated.
